Segment 1

  • What is Segment 1 of Graduated Licensing?

    Segment 1 is the first part of Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing program for teens. It includes both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. Upon completion, students are eligible for a Level 1 License (learner’s permit).

  • When can my student start Driver’s Education (Segment 1)?

    Students can begin Segment 1 Driver’s Education as early as 14 years and 8 months old.


  • What are the requirements for starting Segment 1?

    To start Segment 1, your student must be at least 14 years and 8 months old and have a valid Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) or other acceptable driving permit.

  • What happens if my student misses a day of class?

    If your student misses a class, they can make up the lesson on another scheduled class day. We encourage students to attend all classes to ensure they do not fall behind.

  • When will my student begin behind-the-wheel instruction?

    Behind-the-wheel instruction typically begins after a few days of classroom instruction, depending on the class schedule. Students must be prepared for both in-class and driving lessons.

  • Can I practice driving with my teen during Segment 1?

    Yes! You can practice driving with your teen, but they must have their Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) and be accompanied by a licensed adult, 21 years or older, in the car.


  • After completing Segment 1, will you give my student their permit (Level 1 License)?

    No, we do not issue permits. After completing Segment 1, your student must pass the written test and driving skills test at the Secretary of State office to obtain their Level 1 License.


  • How do I pay for Segment 1 at All About Driving of Waterford Inc.?

    Payment for Segment 1 can be made online or in person at the time of registration. We accept various payment methods, including credit/debit cards.


  • My student just completed Segment 1. What do I do now?

    After completing Segment 1, your student will need to schedule their road test at the Secretary of State office to obtain their Level 1 License. Then, they can begin Segment 2 after meeting the eligibility requirements.

Segment 2

  • What is Segment 2 of Graduated Licensing?

    Segment 2 is the second phase of Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing program. It’s designed to reinforce safe driving practices and is required before obtaining a Level 2 License.


  • When can my student start Segment 2?

    Your student can start Segment 2 as soon as they have completed Segment 1 and have held their Level 1 License for at least 3 months.

  • What if I took Segment 1 at a different driving school?

    If your student took Segment 1 at a different driving school, they are still eligible to take Segment 2 at All About Driving. We just need proof of Segment 1 completion.

  • How do I pay for Segment 2 at All About Driving of Waterford Inc.?

    You can pay for Segment 2 when you register online or in person at our office. We accept credit/debit cards and other forms of payment.


Graduated Licensing

  • What is graduated licensing?

    Graduated licensing is a phased approach to granting driving privileges to teens. It is designed to allow new drivers to gain experience in stages while limiting their exposure to high-risk driving situations.

  • How many levels of licensing are there?

    There are three levels of licensing in Michigan:

    • Level 1 License (Learner’s Permit)
    • Level 2 License (Intermediate License)
    • Level 3 License (Full License)
  • What does my teen need to obtain a Level 1 license?

    To obtain a Level 1 License, your teen must complete Segment 1 of Driver’s Education and pass both the written and driving skills tests at the Secretary of State office.


  • What does my teen need to obtain a Level 2 license?

    To obtain a Level 2 License, your teen must have held their Level 1 License for at least 6 months, completed Segment 2 Driver’s Education, and passed a road skills test.


  • What does my teen need to obtain a Level 3 license?

    To obtain a Level 3 License, your teen must have held their Level 2 License for at least 6 months and be 17 years or older.

  • Are there restrictions when driving with a Level 1 license?

    Yes, with a Level 1 License, teens are only allowed to drive with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult 21 years or older in the car.

  • Are there restrictions when driving with a Level 2 license?

    With a Level 2 License, teens may not drive between 10 PM and 5 AM unless accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, or adult 21 years or older, or for specific exemptions like school, work, or medical emergencies.


  • Are there restrictions when driving with a Level 3 license?

    No, there are no restrictions with a Level 3 License once the driver turns 17 and has completed the requirements.
